Rules at 35 Maiden Lane in Covent Garden is the oldest restaurant in London, established in 1798 by Thomas Rule as an oyster bar and chophouse. It has occupied the same premises for its entire history, accumulating décor over two centuries: oil paintings, cartoons, theatrical prints, antlers & taxidermied game on red walls. The kitchen remains committed to traditional British food, potted shrimps, dressed crab, game pies, steak and kidney pudding & seasonal wild game from Rules' own estate, Lartington Park in the Pennines. Past regulars included Charles Dickens, Bram Stoker, John Betjeman & Edward VII, who took Lillie Langtry through a private entrance to avoid his retinue.
The Place
The dining rooms are divided across two floors, ground and first, in a narrow Victorian building with mirrored alcoves, banquette seating & the accumulated decorative weight of two centuries of collecting. A private room at the top floor was where Edward VII met Lillie Langtry in the 1880s; the discreet second entrance onto Maiden Lane was used to avoid public attention. The menu changes seasonally but the core, game, pastry, puddings, does not. The restaurant is fully licensed and serves a wine list deliberately limited to wines that pair with game.

Rules is not merely old, it is operating within the precise same premises, serving a recognisably similar food tradition, under private ownership, without corporate reinvention, for over 225 years. That continuity makes it an unusual document of a specific English culinary tradition: the game cookery and pudding culture that was once standard in London restaurants but has otherwise largely disappeared. It appeared in Spectre (2015) as a Bond film location and has appeared in novels by Dickens, Evelyn Waugh & Graham Greene.
